Downtown St. Louis is known for its hidden gems, be it pop-up ghost kitchens, undiscovered bands, or in this case the Downtown Bicycle Station. Managed by the CID and Urban Shark Bicycle Company, its opening in 2011 marked it the first bicycle commuter station in the region and continues to be of great value today. This commuter-focused station is geared towards individuals who want to bicycle to work, get exercise during their lunch break, and even schedule quick repairs from neighboring Urban Shark Bicycle Company.
This station is more than just a place to securely park a bicycle for the day – it offers free access to air pumps, key-coded locker room facilities that include showers, and individual lockers. Memberships are available for purchase, which include additional benefits such as discounts on bicycle repair work and 24-hour access. Cyclists who are interested in trying out the station can request a free one-day pass, as well. As these amenities are made accessible to the public, it is of high priority that the station remains organized and clean.
Since its opening, the CID’s Clean Team has been maintaining the Downtown Bicycle Station. The team members alternate cleaning the station nearly every day to provide a clean, welcoming space. Team Leader Toshorn, one of the primary members who oversees the station and 14-year team member, works with his colleagues to maintain the station with its provided supplies.
“We clean both the men’s and women’s locker rooms,” Toshorn said. “The station provides the supplies and we go ahead disinfecting the showers, counter tops, lockers, mirrors, and emptying the trash cans.”
Additionally, the Clean Team refills soap, tissues, paper towels, and mops the floor.
“It’s a nice convenience for Downtown,” said Toshorn. “People can ride there in the morning, shower and head to work. Then they can come back throughout the day to go for a ride. It’s nice to have.”
The Downtown Bicycle Station is located at 1009 Locust Street and is open 24/7 to members with access to a key fob. If you are interested in becoming a member, please call Urban Shark Bicycle Company at (314) 881 – 0322.
